Poetry Reading and Wine Reception, September 10, 7pm-10pm: Scottish Poetry Library. Free
The Scottish Poetry Library, housed in a glass and oak building on the Canongate next to the Salisbury Crags, is one of the highlights of Edinburgh. Since its opening in 1984, it has offered to the public a wealth of poetry books and audio material (with an emphasis on contemporary poetry, particularly from Scotland), as well as reference books on all things concerning poetry. The Scottish Poetry Library also runs a dynamic events programme and hosts readings, workshops, and exhibitions on a regular basis.

Poetry Reading, September 11, 7pm-1am: The Rowantree (Caves).  Free entry

In the eighteenth century the Rowantree was called 'Lucky Middlemass's Tavern' and was the meeting place for the Oyster Club, a supper club for Edinburgh intellectuals. Founded by geologist James Hutton, chemist Joseph Black and economist Adam Smith, the club was frequented by other oyster (and porter) enthusiasts as David Hume, William Robertson, John Clerk, and Adam Ferguson. Guests included Benjamin Franklin and James Watt. More on the Oyster Club here.
